Why is Water So Important?

We are totally dependent on water, but most of us probably don’t get enough! You could live for some time without food, but you’d only last a couple of days without getting enough water, it’s that essential. We all know that we should be drinking water regularly, but just why is it so important?


Water helps us to…

  • Regulate body temperature
  • Remove waste from the body
  • Protect the joints from damage
  • Protect the eyes, with tears
  • Conduct biochemical reactions in the body
  • Make chewing and swallowing possible (saliva)
  • Carry nutrients & oxygen around the body (blood)

We Are Water

So much of us is made up of water. An adult body is about 60% water; our blood is 90% water, our muscles are 75% water, bone 25% water and even our fat cells are 5% water.

We constantly lose water throughout the day through breathing, sweating and going to the toilet. Keeping our fluid levels topped up throughout the day is crucial for keeping us focused and allowing our brains to work to their best ability.


Avoid Dehydration

On an average day, we should be drinking between 1.5 and 2.5 litres (15-20 glasses) of water. 1 to 1.5 litres of this (8-12 glasses) should come from drinks and a further 0.5 – 1 litre from foods. On a hot day or during exercise you need to drink more. Carrying a bottle around with you wherever you go is such an easy way to do this. Take small sips throughout the day and avoid dehydration!

Just 2% dehydration can start to impair your mental performance, slowing you down and making you less productive. Stay sharp at work by having regular small drinks of water to be on top of your game.


Top Tip…

It’s important to remember that you should drink an extra millilitre of water for every calorie you burn. So if you’re working out on a treadmill and you burn 200 calories, you need to drink at least an extra 200ml of water.


You may be dehydrated if…

  • Your mouth feels dry
  • You are getting mild headaches
  • Your pee is dark yellow or brown
  • You are feeling tired/lethargic.
